Alfred Simkin

Assistant Professor

Alfred is developing improved algorithms and workflows for modeling the genomics of host/pathogen interactions. He also has a strong interest in training and mentoring the next generation of computational biologists. Alfred completed a PhD in the molecular evolution of noncoding RNAs at Umassmed in 2014, and a postdoc at Cornell that created simulations for modeling the evolution of microRNA binding sites in 2016. Alfred was a tenure track teaching professor of genetics at Elon University from 2016 until 2021, where he mentored undergraduate students in the genomics of endogenous retroviruses, before returning to more research-intensive roles, first in academia as an assistant professor at Umassmed in 2021, and then in industry as a staff scientist in the genomics division of IDEXX in 2022.
