Research
The Bailey lab studies the role genetic variation in immunity and disease from the perspective of both the host and pathogen. Our work takes place in a large collaborative multi-discipilinary framework working with investigators across the world primarily studying malaria, Epstein Barr Virus, and endemic Burkitt lymphoma.
Key to these projects is how human and parasite variation interplay. For all these questions we leverage high-throughput approaches developing both experimental and computational tools to address these questions.
We are focused on developing tools for seuqencing to allow for appropriate breadth and power.
Our ultimate goal is to contribute to developing innovative approaches in genomic research in general. We generate high-quality variant (SNPs, indels and structure variations) data and conduct more accurate advanced genomic analyses. We utilized genomics to further understand the biology and epidemiology of host-pathogen interactions and provide information that can be translated to develop or guide interventions such as drugs, vaccines and diagnostics.
We use genomic data to understand the origin of drug resistance mutations in Africa and how they spread. We also study complex genetic events such as gene rearrangements and recombinations.
We leverage cutting-edge genomic and genetic tools to analyze our data (samples collected through various collaborations) and public datasets by looking at, not only, principal component analysis, identity by descent, positive selection signatures, complexity of infections, phylogenetic relationships, and genetic association studies.
